Whimsical Houses in Watercolour
With Renata Wright

In this Whimsical Houses watercolour workshop, we’ll begin with real-life inspiration — simple photos of everyday homes and buildings — and nudge them off the straight and narrow. Rooflines may tilt, windows might stretch or shrink, chimneys could lean. Before long they’ll be, full of fun, whimsical personality.

Using watercolour, you’ll explore loose, expressive colour to bring your new buildings to life, then add character and detail with fine black pen, suggesting wonky bricks, trailing vines, crooked doors and all the charming imperfections that make a house feel alive. This workshop is less about precision and more about play. You’ll be guided through techniques that help you loosen up your drawing, trust your instincts, and embrace a slightly quirky way of seeing.

By the end, you’ll have created your own whimsical house illustration and will go home with a soft spot for crooked chimneys and stories tucked behind tiny doors.
