Jane Stone

Jane Stone has been a textile artist since the late 1970s, drawing inspiration from her life in Western Australia. Raised on a farm near Borden in proximity to the Stirling Ranges, her primary education was enriched by nature, with bush walks along a nearby river forming part of the school curriculum. Jane relocated to Perth for boarding school and, as a teenager, attended Albany Summer School where she pursued courses in screen-printing and weaving—an experience that significantly influenced her career direction.

Upon graduating from WAIT (now Curtin University), Jane established a textile design studio. Her screen-printed works, featuring local flora and fauna, were distributed across Australia and frequently purchased as keepsakes by international visitors.

Jane’s creative process is informed by her appreciation for the environment, decorative arts, family traditions, community celebrations, and travel. She is particularly captivated by the shadows and textures found in tree bark, utilizing photography to document landscapes, especially trees and wildflowers.

Her interest in stencil cutting led her to Japan, where she participated in workshops on stencil cutting and shibori. Some of her printing and painting is done on her back veranda before the cloth is stitched and assembled in her studio, reminiscent of the intimate workspaces she encountered in Japan.

Currently, Jane employs hand and machine embroidery to painted or dyed fabric surfaces in the creation of her eclectic style of embroidered textiles.
