This short course, offered over 5 afternoons, introduces participants to the foundations of Chinese calligraphy and painting. Guided by artist and educator Huilin Sun—who began formal art training at age 12 and holds degrees in both Chinese design and ECU Visual Art and Art Education—students will explore the close relationship between calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting.
The course covers two major styles: Xieyi, the expressive, impressionistic approach, and Gongbi, known for its refined linework and delicate shading. Drawing on her broad training across painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking and textiles, Huilin offers an accessible, culturally rich introduction suitable for beginners and art enthusiasts alike.
I began formal art training from the age of 12. I have a 4-year degree in design from China, and a 4-year degree from ECU in Visual Art and Art Education. I studied a variety of art forms including painting, drawing, sculpting, printmaking and textiles.
I am a qualified secondary school art teacher and taught art at the International School of Beijing since 1995, and calligraphy at UWA since 2010.
