Beneath the Surface
With Janine Judge

Create a stunning marine-themed textile artwork while learning the process Janine uses in her award-winning quilts. This immersive workshop offers a comprehensive introduction to fabric collage and thread painting, guiding you through the key steps needed to create a highly detailed underwater scene.

Beginning with a reference photo, you will learn how to develop a pattern and construct a fabric collage of a marine animal such as a turtle, leafy sea dragon or fish. From there we will dive into thread painting (freehand machine embroidery), layering thread to add form, depth and movement as your subject comes to life. The scene is completed with sculptural embroidery coral stitched on wash away fabric, couched yarns, or beading to create a richly textured underwater world.

You can use your own reference image, or one that is provided.

Finally, she adds intricate details through thread painting, giving her work a vivid and lifelike quality. Janine has won local and national awards and held a solo exhibition to showcase her art. Her work is held in private collections around the world. She is a WA Quilters Association accredited teacher and has been published in international magazines where she shares her creative techniques and inspiration.

Her aim is to inspire others to appreciate and protect the amazing natural world we live in while taking them on a journey around the world.
