Fiona Buchanan

Fiona Buchanan is a professional Western Australian artist working in both pastels and oils. She trained in theatre arts as a scenic artist and designer. This taught her that nothing is impossible with paint, and that incredible illusions can be created simply by applying liquid colour.

Fiona enjoys trying to put her emotion and attitude to the Earth’s beauty into her work, which is about the environment and its balance. She works in oils on canvas and in pastel. She takes and uses her own reference photos and loves visiting the places and people that she paints. She loves to work in pastel as it’s such an expressive medium and has such a beautiful velvet finish. As she loves to draw, this medium allows her to draw and paint at the same time.

Two achievements that she is proud of are being a finalist in the Black Swan Prize for Portraiture in 2011, and also winning first prize in Australian Artist magazine’s Seascapes, Rivers and Lakes competition in 2017. Fiona features in the ‘Artists of Perth’ book published in 2017.
