201: Marimbas for Beginners

Marimbas are wooden xylophones; they are played in many parts of the world and are especially popular in Southern Africa. They are easy to play and when played together as an ensemble (5 marimbas) they produce exciting and uplifting music. This course is for Beginners and will introduce techniques for how to play marimbas and to teach some African-style marimba tunes and other songs. Lots of fun!

Mike O’Shaughnessy

Mike O’Shaughnessy discovered the joys of drumming, percussion and marimbas in 1990. He has studied drumming, percussion and marimba music with many teachers in Australia, the UK, West Africa and at WAAPA in Perth.

He leads community drum circles and has taught African drumming and marimbas to adults and children for many years. Mike believes we are all musical and that music brings joy and expression into our lives. His classes aim to be fun to allow people at all levels to discover and develop their musical abilities.

He has played with numerous music groups including WAAPA’s ‘Defying Gravity’, ‘Acushla’, ‘Village Vibes’, ‘Afrotonic’ Dance Group and ‘The Spooky Men of the West’ choir.
