In this class with fibre artist and popular tutor Martien van Zuilen, students will combine the art of making strong, hand-felted cords with the basketry technique of coiling, to create colourful vessels and small platters.
We will start with making a variety of strong cords using hand-dyed wool and novelty fibres. Once dry, waxed linen and other threads are used to transform the felted cords into 3-dimensional treasures.
A range of coiling techniques will be shown, your artworks will be unique and finished to a high standard

Martien van Zuilen
Martien van Zuilen is a renowned felt artist and tutor living in Perth, WA. She exhibits her high-quality and distinctive felt art nationally and internationally. Since the late 1980s she has tought felt-making workshops at all levels of experience throughout Australia, in Europe and throughout the USA.
Martien runs the artisan dyeing studio Colourant Dyeworks, supplying hand-dyed fibres and fabrics to feltmakers and textile artists worldwide. She is the founder of the Victorian Feltmakers, the current editor of Felt (Australia’s national felting magazine) and the Convenor of Fibres West Inc.
Alongside her studio practice, it makes for a busy and creative life! Martien holds a PhD in Anthropology (2013) with a study on the significance of textile art practices in contemporary Australia. Her artwork is regularly included in international publications, including several books and numerous specialist arts magazines.
