115: Landscapes for Pastels

Working from reference photos, Sarah Pondevie will teach you how to simplify the complexities of a landscape using value and colour for balance and design, with a focus on rendering skies, clouds, and trees.

She will guide you in the process of creating a series of pastel landscapes through a combination of demonstrations, exercises, and individual guidance.

You will learn how to prime your painting surface, compose and set out a design and create depth and texture.

Sarah Pondevie

Sarah Pondevie is an artist with a passion for pastels. Her work is a narrative of her travels, whether walking in her suburb and being inspired by ordinary wonders, road trips exploring our land, or studies of simple objects in her house. She loves Plein Air and observational painting, as it reveals more than any photograph and has a direct influence on her studio work.

Sarah uses strong design elements in her compositions through value and texture, and she is consumed by the colours in shadows and reflected light. She has recently begun working in oils and watercolours, and finds the different mediums complement and inform her style.

In 2022, Sarah won the first prize in the Pastel Society Annual Awards and recently the 2023 WASA Plein Air award.
