113: Watercolour Illustration for Children’s Books

Watercolour is a beautiful and expressive medium. Combined with picture book illustration it can create stunning visual narratives for personal or professional picture books.

Join international-selling author and illustrator, Gabriel Evans, as he shares watercolour illustration techniques and methods in a course that will see students produce a series of small artworks and provide the initial skills in book illustration.

Gabriel will be sharing insight into the book industry with discussions on portfolio development for publishers, using social media and the systems for illustrating a manuscript.

Gabriel Evans

Gabriel Evans is an international-selling children’s book author and illustrator working with some of Australia’s most loved publishers including Penguin, Scholastic, Walker Books and Hardie Grant. He has written and illustrated six books including Norton and the Bear (Berbay) – notably listed in the Children’s Book Council of Australia Picture Book of the Year 2021, A Human for Kingsley (Hardie Grant), The Cute Penguin (Hardie Grant) and Ollie and Augustus (Walker Books).

He has illustrated books for several acclaimed Australian authors including his recent collaborations with Sonya Hartnett for Blue Flower (Penguin), and Jane Godwin’s Little One (Affirm). He travels Australia talking to adults and children from major capital cities to remote indigenous communities in the Pilbara and the Kimberley. He works from a small studio near a river where he drinks tea and makes books.
