111: Natural Fibre Basketry

One of the most popular courses ever offered at the Albany Summer School, returns in 2024 due to overwhelming demand from students. Tutor Maureen James will be introducing three methods of basketry, Coiling, Twining and Free Form. Once students have learned these techniques, they will be encouraged to use them to produce their own individually crafted piece/s.

By the end of the course they should be proficient in all methods of basketry.

Maureen James

Maureen James first learned Basketry at the Albany Summer School in 1985 and in 1987 she was chosen to exhibit at the Crafts Council of Western Australia’s Centre, the Bunbury Regional Art Gallery and Viewpoint (1993).

Since then, she has tutored at the Albany Summer School in 1988, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023. Maureen has also taught Basketry in Margaret River, at the Mt Barker Arts Centre, at the Stirling Range Fibre Weekend, Vancouver Arts Centre and twice in Pemberton at the Fine Wood Craft Gallery.
