Martien van Zuilen (PhD) is a textile artist, dyer and teacher, specialising in handmade felt. She ‘fell into’ felt making in 1985 and has been smitten with the medium ever since. Martien has exhibited her distinctive felt artworks in Australia and internationally and since the late 1980s she delivers throughout Australia, as well as in Europe and throughout the USA. Through her dyeing studio Colourant Dyeworks she supplies the finest hand-dyed wools, silk fibres, yarns and fabrics to textile makers worldwide. Martien is the Convenor of Fibres West Inc. and the editor of FELT, Australia’s national felting magazine. In 2013, she completed her PhD in Anthropology, with an ethnographic thesis on the significance of women’s textile art practices within the context of Australia’s cultural landscape. Learn how to make a wide variety of hand-felted flowers in every shape, size and application imaginable. Flowers as sculptures, brooches, jewellery and pendants, fashions, accessories and more. Or use your new-found ‘flower power’ to make whole bunches and fill your favourite vase! In this new and exciting (did we mention colourful?) class with renowned felt artist Martien van Zuilen, you will use fine merino wool and various materials to create buds and blossoms, intricate petals and stems. You will also learn how to connect the various components. Flower Power Rules. Wool and other fibres can be purchased in class.

HANDMADE FELT MEETS MACHINE EMBROIDERY: Furnishings and Adornments
Felt and Embroidery are a match made in heaven – discover it for yourself in this new class with felt artist Martien van Zuilen. First, we make felt using fine Merino and other wools, attending to design, colours and using resists. Then we add freehand machine embroidery, focusing on texture, relief, and composition. Create unique furnishing fabrics (think cushions and lampshades, placemats and bags), jewellery adornments such as eye-catching brooches and pendants, or machine embroidered felts for wall-hangings! All levels of felting experience welcome; you must be able to use (and bring!) a sewing machine.

RUNAWAY FELT: Slippers and Boots
What could be comfier on your feet than hand-felted slippers and in-door boots?! In this 3-day class with felt artist Martien van Zuilen, you will make a pair of each! Using merino and other wool fibres, water & soap, and some elbow grease, you will learn seamless felting techniques to design & make-to-measure your very own felted footwear. Shaping & sizing, colour & design, optional laces, and attaching soles will all be covered. The class welcomes all levels of experience.

NUNO FELT: Spiral Scarves and Splendid Wraps
This Nuno felting class with popular felting teacher Martien van Zuilen is a creative adventure in thinking outside the square! Start with a rectangular piece of sheer silk fabric, add some Fine Merino wool fibres to the mix and make a unique hand-felted Spiral Scarf or Wrap that is lightweight, has amazing drape and bears no resemblance to the initial fabric shape! You will learn all about Nuno felting, including edging, pre-felts, tassels and loops. The focus is on 'quality in creativity'; Nuno felting is wonderfully playful - the aim is to also finish works to a high standard.
