101: HOW TO WRITE & DELIVER A SPEECH THAT WORKS Writing a speech is a challenge, but if you know the essential dos and don’ts it is going to be a lot easier for you. In this workshop with Dr. Alan Hancock you will learn how to write a speech that engages your audience from start to finish. It could be a birthday speech, a eulogy, or a wedding speech. Students will look at structure, content, style, use of language, humour and rhetoric. What is rhetoric? – Come and find out. 103: COMPREHENSIVE FOUNDATIONS IN GLASS BEADMAKING This course will take students through the basic principles and foundations of an age old technique of glass bead making, but with a contemporary twist. 107: CREATIVE WORKS ON PAPER: Watercolour and drawing techniques applied to a range of subjects In the course of a week we will cover everything from landscape to figure work. Whilst this is a watercolour class, students will gain a lot of new skills in drawing so that they will be able to express themselves better. The class will begin with some traditional watercolour techniques and move to charcoal and ink and tint. Gouache will also be covered. Many lovely paintings will be achieved in a short space of time. Pamela Griffith will help you look at contemporary drawing styles to gain an understanding of which works succeed in today’s art competitions. On day three there will be a live model from which to work. Studies will be made in pencil and wash. At the conclusion of this course, as well as having a work ready to frame, each student should have a lovely sample folder of techniques that they can refer to when working alone in their own studios. 108: DOLLS WITH SOULS Cecile Williams and Nalda Searles have been tutoring collaborative doll making workshops for many years. The dolls they encourage participants to make using recycled materials are personal and quirky. They are hand-stitched and can be decorated in many unique ways depending on the materials available. Students will be guided through developing the shape and size of the doll, cutting the fabrics to suit that design and then stitching the figure to shape the idea. Faces can be expressive, limbs can be movable, attitudes can be explored with pleasure. The outcome is a Doll with Soul which reflects the maker’s materials and often, aspects of ones personality. 109: PURE SILVER JEWELLERY WITH METAL CLAY Silver Metal Clay consists of very small particles of silver mixed with an organic binder and water. Silver metal clay can be shaped just like any soft clay, by hand or using moulds. After firing with a hand-held gas torch, kiln or on a gas stove, the binder burns away, leaving the pure, sintered metal known as fine silver. In this class tutor Pam Annesley will show you how to manipulate the clay into various shapes suitable for jewellery items. You can texture the clay, roll sheets of clay and add other textured sheets and embellishments. You will also set gemstones and add dichroic glass into pieces of jewellery. You will be able to make several items of jewellery and will be introduced to the infinite possibilities of this exciting medium. 115: HAVING FUN WITH ACRYLICS ON PAPER AND CANVAS Acrylic paint is very satisfying to use once you know how to handle it. It is possible to do nearly everything, and more, than can be done using other traditional mediums. This workshop with Pamela Griffith, aims to help you produce expressive and original art works using the many techniques that are good practice in acrylic paint. It is a hands on class with plenty of teacher assistance aimed at you achieving your personal best. Pamela demonstrates each step in the production of each artwork. No student should feel out of their depth. The class begins by exploring the watercolour-type effects possible on paper. Techniques covered include transparent watercolour techniques using acrylic, then the use of gouache or non-transparent effects. Two small artworks result from this exercise. From there students will produce an expressive work on a large piece of rough heavy-weight paper. This will be completed on day two. On the third day a landscape on canvas will be commenced. The canvas will be tinted to receive the artwork. This will be done in class and then students will proceed to produce a contemporary landscape with brush, collage and palette knife work. 119: FREFLOW EDIT-REWRITE Dr. Alan Hancock shows how to rework a piece of writing for publication, from a fragment to a first draft, to a finished piece. It offers students a creative approach to structuring and reworking a story – fiction or life-story. The project could be a short story, novel or life story. It might exist as a first draft, as a text fragment, or as a loosely woven set of writings. The important thing is that there is a starting point on the page that needs to be developed. Each participant is invited to bring a short sample of their work (either an extract of up to 5 pages, a synopsis of the overall project, or both) to the course. During the week they will get advice on how it might be developed and/or revised, and feedback on the final draft. 404: BASIC SOAPMAKING Learn how to make superb moisturizing soaps from the basic raw materials. 407: CREATIVE TEXTILE TECHNIQUES Create a series of design surfaces that can be utilized as individual pieces for an art canvas, book covers, framed piece, embellish a quilt, a bag or feature on a garment or a wall hanging. Using a wide range of materials and a variety of techniques, you will push the boundaries with guidance from tutor Pam Annesley, while having fun creating an eye-catching surface using assorted textile applications. 408: CLASSICAL HEAD STUDY CANCELLED In clay, using precise measurements, create a portrait head of a sitting model. During 3 days, a series of datum points are established to map out the position of the strategic anatomy. When these locations are determined, a process of building between these points create the form with an accuracy that is based on simple geometric principles. This process draws in ancient Greek tradition Greek sculpture, principles of mapping and underpinning forensic anatomical understandings. This rigorous and rational process provides a learning framework that can become the platform for even the most expressionist, figurative sculpture. This concentrated masterclass with Richard Merito will serve to overcome the ‘eyes prejudice’ resulting in an advanced understanding of this most expressive part of your body. A mould of the final clay head will be taken with a view to a permanent work being made. Given time, a demonstration of metal and other casting will end the workshop.
